I composed “Divina Luz” in 1973, as the 1st movement to my first jazz concert of the same name. It was performed live in concert at the Eastman School of Music that same summer. Last year (2023), I reworked the concerto a bit and renamed it “70 Winters Young,” which appeared on my 3rd album, “The Way It Is.” It was always meant to be played by a 70-piece studio orchestra, but this tune also works great as a vehicle for jazz improvisation. So, here it is for septet, as a jazz fusion/straight ahead piece.
