A Blast from the Past
Disco nostalgia and music for Cardio Climb class! ------ “Hot Stuff!” (Donna Summer) ------ “What?” (Giorgio Moroder) ------ “catchy” (external reviewer) ------ “The song that is played by the band while the audience waits for the star to walk on stage. Hints of Bowie, Nile Rodgers, Kraftwerk, Fela Kuti, David Byrne. Should be adopted by a radio station as their go-to instrumental, as the shift in mood, rhythmic punctuation and occasional vocal would act as a perfect interlace with a mellifluous DJ voice. Just sayin” (Mari Royla) ------ “Great overall beat, rhythm and most of the instrumentals … a classic funk sound…great for a montage in a movie or show” (Reverb Nation Crowd Review)more

My Dear Mabel
Queen-like piano and harmonies lead to fast-paced rock song with plenty of strings and a fuzz-laden guitar solo. ------- “Cool rock melodies and feel… It feels like a Queen song and that’s cool… a lot of interesting musical parts” (Nashville Songwriters Association International Song Evaluator) ------- “The edginess of the music and lyrics sit in welcome juxtaposition to that most old-fashioned of female first names, ending with the unexpected agency of someone who in the singer’s telling sounds like an Agatha-Christie character” (Mari Royla) ------- “The sections with multiple voices remind me of Queen.” (Reverb Nation Crowd Review) ------- “We really like what you did here, Pierre” (Freddie Mercury & Brian May) ------- Lyrics Oh, how, how I wish we hadn’t done The things we did at your place last night, My dear Mabel Those wonderful things we did In your bed and on your kitchen table For I fear, I fear that without realizing, We might have begun weaving a web From which we might well Struggle to disentangle My plan: we would just hook up for the night And then be done But when I took the walk of shame I felt alone, That it was wrong And that those moments without you Were far too long And now I wish your kitchen table Had been too small And that the things done at your place Had not been done For, all day long, I’ve been thinking of you But something tells me that you don’t Oh, how, how I wish I had stayed At your place for breakfast this morning, My dear Mabel That I had sat at your Uncomfortable kitchen table And finally seen it from another angle For I know, I know without exaggerating We’re really meant to be an item To weave a web, to ride in tandem Call me romantic, but I know we click so, Come on, let’s snuggle and get tangled My plan: I will just move in with you now And then be done I’ll meet your parents And I will call your place our home And then my song Will be the happiest little ditty ever sung And now I wish that you would just Pick up your phone But could it be the number you gave me Might be wrong? For, all day long, I’ve tried to say I love you But something tells me that you don’t.more

The Smell of Kerosene
A largely acoustic love song, with Beatles-evoking arrangements. -------- “Interesting, unique, and kind of retro in a great way… Love it - really drew me in… So many great [lyrics] visuals … Really poetic, some great double entendre … The "aye aye"s are fun and hooky… Evocative, cohesive, clever… Chord changes, especially with the cello are very pretty. Love the harmonies too… Reminds me a bit of ELO, David Bowie, Beatles. Very unique style… I love this! Reminds me of a lot of great classic pop/rock I grew up on (Nashville Songwriting Association International Song evaluator) ------- “Englebert the storytelling observer, straight into the listener’s ear with the invite: join me on an element of my life. You can’t help but want to share the not-so-mundane everyday life of the singer, which contrasts the wide big world of luxury with the only thing that counts: human connection (in various manifestations). The singer/songwriter becomes a reliable friend in this song, bridging moods from playful to serious, from Baroque via 80s synths to conclude in a folksy woodshed.” (Mari Royla) ------- “The lyrics are really beautiful and candid and suit the instrumental perfectly. The chord progression is really effective toward creating a bittersweet effect overall. A really nice song.” (Reverb Nation Crowd Review) ----- “The first line in this song is a "What in the world?" and that makes me want to pay more attention to the song. I like the beat overall, the music is a perfect match with the lyrics. They fit really well together.” (Reverb Nation Crowd Review) -------- Lyrics I like the smell of kerosene The frequent flyers’ magazines I like the way the flight attendants Stand at attention for safety instructions I like the lounges With all the free booze and the munchies CNN on their TV screens I like the take offs and the landings And all the flying in between I like the smell of Duty Free Chocolate, Chanel and luxury But most of all, I like your smile when I get home I like your arms where I get warm I like how tiny the world is When I see it from the sky Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye I like how beautiful it looks When I see it through your eyes Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye I like it way up in the air When I am neither here nor there I like how high I am my two feet on the ground When I’m by your side Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye I like a jet plane at the gate I like to board, I like to wait I like a jet plane in the sky The tiny seats, how they recline But in the end, Much as I like when we ascend I long for you until we land I like the way my bag is hard to tell At the luggage carousel Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye I like the way the dorky shuttles Take the exhausted to their hotel Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye I like it way up in the air When I am neither here nor there I like the jet lag How it makes me fall asleep at 10am Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye I like how we get closer 30 thousand feet above the ground Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye I like being your lover After the Uber driver gets me home Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye I like an ice-cold lager beer But that is neither there nor here I’d like to stay home with you forever And never take another flight Aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, ayemore
