Fourteen Days Lain Alone - a tribute to Layne Staley
I've been meaning to write this for close to twenty years but, as I've mentioned in other posts, I ended up quitting music for eighteen years and I'm only just getting around to writing again. The point was to create a song that not only honoured Layne Staley, but also had a similar vibe to Alice in Chains, and more specifically Jar of Flies or the Unplugged stuff... purely because I normally write heavy and wanted something more subtle for my homage to Layne. Each verse contains two AIC song titles.
The lyrics (and title) are based on how he pushed everyone away after the death of his ex-fiancee around the Halloween of 1999, how he died in solitude, undiscovered for fourteen days, and how twice as many days could have finally cleaned him up. I'll probably re-record the vocals as I recorded them all in one go yesterday evening and I've got a bit of a cold just now. But I figured I'd share anyway.
VERSE 1
Feels like yesterday I cried
a little part of me had died
But it's over now.
It's clear to see that something's wrong
and yet the news that you were gone
still won't brush away.
BRIDGE 1
It's hard to see through shuttered eyes
The smile you wore as your disguise
VERSE 2
In and out, they said you came
yet every time was just the same
'cause you hate to feel.
The darkest Halloween for you
and ev'ry February 22
black gave way to blue
BRIDGE 2
It's hard to help those who refuse
or slip advice within the tubes
CHORUS
Those fourteen days you'd lain alone
Come clean in only fourteen more
VERSE 3
Almost twenty years have passed
A little bitter to the last
so you pushed away.
Hands were reaching all around
until the day that you were found
with your shame in you.
BRIDGE 3
It's easy now to reconcile
the pain behind your shattered smile
CHORUS
Those fourteen days you'd lain alone
I'd bleed for you for fourteen moremore
