It's Natural to Lose Friends
I started writing this song in an off-the-grid cabin in the dense redwood forests of Cazadero, California during the Summer of 2019. Except for my dog, I was alone on my buddy's 50 acres of land with nothing to do but pull weeds, do some yoga, and play every instrument I could fit into the car. I pounded on the drums, screamed my lungs out, smoked too much weed... and came away with a dozen newly sketched out songs. This is the first song of that batch to be fully produced and released. I wrote this song as an American answer to Syd Barrett's "It Is Obvious." It's about the troubling times we live in and how we need friends and family now more than ever. Love the people who treat you with kindness, respect, and who make your life worth living. Love them now because no one is here forever. Stars shining brightly Stars shine so brightly I wonder how they live so long and why they have to die Electric smoke fills my lungs As the concrete cracks, this city's undone 1000 years and here is not here A candle's not a raging fire I'm merely dust And I miss the old me Sun with the cool breeze Green grass among the trees You see It's natural to lose friends A diamond solitaire We're all diamonds and we're solitaire Who keeps all our prayers when they inevitably vanish in the air The new age is the screen Everything fluorescent and clean I just want what I see in my dreams I see fire I see fire I see an endless raging fire I'm merely dust And I miss the old me Sun with the cool breeze Green grass among the trees You see It's natural to lose friends When the night finally comes And the blade make 2 from 1 What is and what was I'm grateful I've had some fun What is it with this life And truth and love What is it with True love Maybe it's not exactly where You wanted it to be there I've been dust, I've been stars And breezes and guitars And colliding diamond suns Now I'm an animal on the run So it's natural to lose friends They're the ones who are near you They're the ones who are near you The ones who are a mirror to you It's natural to lose friends And if we're reborn Is there anything at all to mourn? Except how much I miss my family And now I miss my family It's natural to lose friendsmore
