Dan McCarthy has remained Omaha's best-kept secret for the past five years-or-so, despite having toured with the likes of Mayday, Neva Dinova, The Good Life, Orenda Fink, Maria Taylor, and Bright Eyes, and despite having recorded with Cursive and Tilly and the Wall (Keys on the former's "Happy Hollow," and accordion! on the latter's "Bottoms of Barrels").
McCarthy Trenching is what Dan does when he is not lending a hand (or both) to his friends, and Trenching's epoymous debut may force McCarthy to finally forfeit his secret status.

This is a story about a fleeting romantic encounter in the foreground of the apocalypse. It's a song about the cyclical patterns of humanity and how destroying ourselves doesn't truly mean it's the end. Our universal needs and desires are preserved and spread through ideology and genetics, only for our descendants to progress through the same tragic narrative. This is a song about human nature and our ineffable ability to make everything about ourselves. It protests, it conforms, and It is guilty of the very thing it criticizes. It's an unreliable document of the individual experience that is, when all is said and done, begging to begin again. more
