Queen
Queen are an English rock band originally consisting of four members: vocalist and pianist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, bass guitarist John Deacon, and drummer Roger Taylor. The band formed in London in 1970 after May and Taylor's former band Smile split after having released an album and single. Freddie replaced lead vocalist Tim Staffell, after the latter's departure from the original trio. There was much deliberation as to what the band's name would be.

Diamond Back
Diamond Back started as a desire to make something that would be one of those songs you put on your car stereo as you drive down a long and lonely road with the windows open. Taking the idea literally we used the Diamond Back as being a snake-like road in front of you and gave it a bluesy groove and a repeating double kick beat to mimic the sound of the road. Phil created a sliding chord pattern that alternated every other phrase by hitting an extra chord inside a triplet. We put an extra beat in the intro to push the groove sideways just before the lyrics start to set a sense of catching up for a moment and to rhythmically suggest that this is where the journey begins. Lyrically it's a contemplative look at one's own life through the lens of a mind that is lost on an internal journey from past to future. We originally wrote this as a gritty southern rock style jam influenced by artists like The Black Crowes. When we played this live we would alternate hitting the guitar with our thumbs to mimic the rumbles of the road. In studio this song came together smoothly, once I finished writing it. Phil and I had always assumed we'd put a third verse, but never wrote one, so I decided to add a solo section and revisit the chorus instead which I think works a lot better. The band rocks out with crunchy guitars and thumping rhythm that take you on a ride along the long, black diamond back, still giving me the sense of that Black Crowes influence which is awesome. I think it turned out pretty much the way we originally planned as a gritty, southern rock band style bar song.more

Lay Down
Lay Down is an introspective exploration of feelings of lust and desire. There are two minds at work, one is obsessed and possessive while the other is steadfast and stubbornly defiant. Originally intended to be a nod to the big sexy songs from the 80's and 90's from artists like Warrant and Aerosmith, it quickly became a pop-rock style song, with a funky beat, that has one mind speak in the verse and the other in the chorus. Phil and I would play this live with a rock style groove in the verses that drop to a reggae, sort of, pulse for the chorus. At one point we were thinking it should be reminiscent of the funky, bass driven wah sound from 70's adult films. The quiet of the third verse that has a heartrate monitor beeping to an unpredictable beat was something from early on in the writing phase, I think we had that idea even before the lyrics. I really love how everything came together in studio. The funky drum beat, the bouncing bass groove, and the killer guitars dancing around with little of that reggae flavouring made me want to join in, rhythmically, so I added some latin style percussion to the mix. I made the percussion a little unconventional to highlight the bouncing groove and triplet hits throughout that I think sound really cool and give it a sparkling pop that makes me want to dance. That percussion took a while, I was still working on it when John had an idea to add a B3 sound in the background that really tied everything together. The third verse starting with a drop to a quiet place while the band mimics the heartbeat, the B3 whines quietly up high while I sing defiantly, Sean's guitar joins in, matching the pitch and whirling around like a sine wave on the screen, making up a sound that is freaking beautiful to me.more
