Mama On Speakerphone is personal. Probably more personal than I was comfortable with when I made it. I made this from a real place in my life. Me and my mother love each other, but love doesn’t mean you never hurt each other. Sometimes the people you love the most know exactly where your heart is, and because of that, they can hurt it in ways a stranger never could. This song came from me being a grown man with my own family, my own responsibilities, bills, pressure and people depending on me, but still being somebody’s son. I know what my mother has done for me. I know there have been times she would give her last trying to help her children. I will never erase that just because we don’t always see eye to eye. But I also believe helping somebody shouldn’t become ammunition later. Love shouldn’t make you feel like you owe somebody your silence. That’s really where “Love With Conditions” came from. I wasn’t trying to make my mother look like a bad mother. I wasn’t making a diss record. I was trying to put words around something I think a lot of grown sons and daughters deal with but don’t know how to say: I can honor you and still need you to honor me. I can appreciate everything you’ve done for me and still tell you when something hurts me. That’s the purpose behind this record. Rayn Legacy gives me somewhere to put the things I normally carry quietly. The phone booth represents that place where I can finally say what I couldn’t say in the room. That’s why the artwork is dark. That’s why it’s raining. That’s why Rayn’s face isn’t the focus. The truth is the focus. I don’t want somebody to hear this and just say, “that’s a good song.” I want the person sitting somewhere dealing with their own mother, father, brother, sister or somebody they love to hear it and think, damn… somebody finally said it. Because sometimes you can love somebody with your whole heart and still need boundaries. Sometimes you can be grateful and hurt at the same time. And sometimes telling the truth isn’t disrespect.
