Sun on the Inside
I wrote this song after a really tough couple of years in my life (things got a bit worse in some regards after writing it, ironically enough). After some painful and unexpected losses and both direct and indirect experiences, I was left feeling emotionally overwhelmed at times and really just somewhat empty? Cold? Searching for that warm feeling again. That thing that would remind me everything is okay and to find comfort in the impermanence that surrounds all aspects of life (including life itself). That thing that would help steer me back to that warm spot in the sun when I was drifting back into the cold shadows. That "thing" was this song for me. I wrote this as a reminder poem to myself that we all have the power and ability to create those warm feelings we seek. We don't have to (and we shouldn't) wait around for an externality (such as the sun) to shine on us and lead the way. We can (and should) be that warm, guiding, and comforting light for ourselves. It's up to us to generate it. That with which we seek, we create. Whatever you may be going through right now, I hope you treat yourself as you would your own best friend. I know things can be tough, confusing, and overwhelming. Sometimes you might want to just curl up in a ball and dissipate into little molecules to hide from the world. Trust me, I know this feeling well. And if you need to isolate to process things. That's okay. Do it if you think it helps. Just don't sit there too long. There's a great, big world out there filled with genuine people and awesome experiences. Don't let a few stinkers dim your inner light. That's your superpower. Give love freely, despite reciprocation Find the people who make you laugh that deep belly laughter, and hang out with them often Create things that you are proud of and share them with the world, regardless of external acknowledgment And give strangers a gift whenever you can... even if that's simply the gift of a smile and hand wave (This was another song I recorded on a 2-cent mic in my closet with so many malfunctions and ambient noises...I thought there was no way it could become something "listenable." I'm very proud of this and deeply grateful for my bro Dj Impact and the beat-maker Nappy Bo) Thank you!more
