so I always just wrote poems until i started rearranging and changing them to be lyrics. This the poem - not perfect, I know but real at the time the words poured out of me. done some time ago when I was toying with just spoken words with a bit of singing and a little shy to sing out loud really.
She's not Mum,

in its original form.
She's not mum
I was Confused bemused with nothing left to lose
The day you said you loved me
Was it true Who knew.
I was your punch bag
to fill your angry gap
I was the reflection you saw
I somehow made you appalled when you looked at me
reminding you of a man I never knew
the failure you were sure i would be
I don't think you cared what would become of me
Belted and whipped, the scars that I'll keep
all the flaws only you saw and how nothing will come of me
just failure defeat drummed in me
And when I told her the Of the years of my abuse
She simply sighed and as if that issue was defused
You didn't face the truth or fight for my innocence or youth
i wanted to shout but this was abuse
It felt like the motherly love was dead
the silence was enough said
Over the years I stopped trying to please
helped me live with awkward ease
The falsity's denied. I begged and I tried
still couldn't say you loved me even when i cried.
Even despite what I achieved. Could have walked the seven Seas
the maternal love had a long time died
calling you mum always felt like i lied
In the end I stopped trying to pretend
That we had a the coveted mother child bond
on my own I proved you wrong
I learnt to defend & fight and find where I belong
I Understood who I am. A woman that's strong
And can rise above like what's said in that song
About not how you fall but about how you rise above
something about having self love
It is fair to say that your words have haunted me
And the scars remain open and deep
I can't hate you or blame you, as I love who I am & will I be
So I guess for this I should thank you
can't forget the reliance i have and made me
Ill remember the day we found out my cousin was abused too
And how you crumpled and cried, like your child had died
But seemed to forget it happened to me too
the horror of the past was in front of you
i, your daughter stood alive by your side,
my cousin and me witnessed you break and made it about you
but we were kids and should have been protected
you the parent and aunt should have shown love but you deflected
it was on that day I withdrew
I gave up on you
For me you should have cried but also be filled with pride
Instead I was struck like the belt that you used to hurt me
That this girl of yours despite all the odds had managed to thrive
In spite of all the troubles I'd had in my life
Now I'm a mum everyday its a blessing
a mum thats present my love isn't missing
A point that was missed by you
my grandma who raised me would tell you its true
Maybe i was a symbol of remorse and not a blessing
But obviously i'm just guessing
I'm simply basing it on the way you treated me
maybe call it neglect id don't know but Love should come with no fee
the only attention was when you were beating me
I was the seed that you planted should have watered and nurtured
cherished who i am, been eager to see who I'm destined to be
But you only saw the negative version you expected of me.
the art form that you created
To show your love, to make me feel i belonged
I'm not dumb, the dunce you called me but I'm clever
the mother bond is not a manmade tether
That this daughter of yours was really the prize
So today, I think you've come to realise
Now you need of some help as you got old
but unlike you i cannot be as cold
It shouldn't have been hard to create that bond
a daisy chain knot shouldn't forget me not
love is water lacking it won't last forever
You called me dumb couldn't see I'm clever
I am now the one that you'll need.
The roles are reversed and it's my love that you'll crave
But the garden was planted with a bad seed
a garden impossible to feed
Its hard to think i'll stand by your grave and grieve
it will be hard to find the words i will breathe
avoid or grieve like a daughter should
Because I can't shake the notion that I should have been loved.
