This song is a tribute to the Battle off Samar on October 25, 1944, during the larger Battle of Leyte Gulf in World War II. It recounts one of the most heroic and improbable naval engagements in history, where the lightly armed American Task Unit 77.4.3 ("Taffy 3")—six small escort carriers, three destroyers, and four destroyer escorts—faced off against a vastly superior Japanese Center Force led by Vice Admiral Takeo Kurita. The Japanese fleet included the super-battleship Yamato (the largest ever built, with 18-inch guns), three other battleships, multiple cruisers, and destroyers. Taffy 3's ships were nicknamed "tin cans" (slang for destroyers) due to their thin armor. Outgunned and surprised at dawn off the coast of Samar, the Americans launched a desperate defense to protect the Leyte invasion beaches.more
