Bruce Hobson has long been recognized as one of Vermont’s outstanding composers. His Trio 1966 was among the seven works selected to represent Vermont at a Bicentennial concert at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. For their first commission of the new millennium, the Sage City Symphony of Bennington, Vermont, selected Hobson to compose his Mountain Paths.
Hobson's music has always been influenced by his love for the Romantic period as well as his active involvement in playing and teaching the piano. The forward looking aspect of his compositions can be heard in a fully chromatic palate of harmonies and melodies that create a sense of motion and repose through a wide variety of rhythms and textures. The musical shapes are created in a manner that comes “from the composer’s genuine desire to write music that would evoke emotive response” (Allen Hughes: The New York Times).
