Fusing the warm, sample-based organic electronica of acts like Caribou and Bonobo, the nostalgic reverb-laden guitar-rock haze of bands like The War on Drugs and his own idiosyncratic melodic-yet-melancholic pop sensibilities, Darln is the debut solo recording project of Montreal-based musician Adam Hickey. On his first EP, Golden Daze, Darln sends you on a percussive journey fueled by driving bass lines and complex beats that soar above colorful and intricate soundscapes. Driven by a scrappy diy ethos, Hickey is content to exist in the in-between spaces of genre. Darln draws its strength from ambiguity of where it sits on the lofi post-rock or retro-future synth-pop spectrums. Determined to keep creating as a means of self-preservation in the early days of pandemic isolation, Darln grew out of demos Hickey would post on Instagram edited to various bits of archival ephemera he would scavenge from the internet.
