Grandpa Vern started out as an Oklahoma city based solo project created by Brandon Ross in their early years of high school , inspired by early independent music and collage rock. As Brandon grew older they became increasingly interested in punk and hardcore, after going to their first punk show . That sound was pushed even farther after a few years of playing playing with drummer Preston Kerran. Shortly after the band was joined by bass player Jack Love and Guitarist Griff Stafford. Grandpa Vern is a heavy sludgy punk band contrasted with introspective lyrics , dealing with things like mental health, loss, and police brutality.
