Gyazette is the musical alter ego of Trinidadian actor, musician, and visual artist Nickolai Salcedo. Emerging from Trinidad and Tobago’s underground alternative music scene in 2007, Gyazette quickly gained a reputation for electrifying performances and a strong musical infusion of roots, rock, funk and calypso. Over the years, Salcedo’s travels broadened his musical palette which influenced the sound of Gyazette. A trip to Ghana in 2014 to shoot the film HERO by Frances-Anne Solomon inspired him to begin shifting towards a fusion of afrobeat, R&B, trap, reggae, and rapso, the socially conscious form of calypso. Contrasting sharply to the heavy guitar-driven sound of earlier releases, Gyazette remains rooted in the sauce of the Trinbagonian and wider Caribbean musical space while simultaneously reflecting the wider world. Salcedo’s signature raspy vocals and percussive guitar playing continue to feature as a focal point of Gyazette’s music.
