Jerusalem

Founded in 1938, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra (JSO) captures the mosaic of Jerusalem's sounds, ethnicity, and culture. Originally established as the Palestine Broadcasting Service Orchestra, it became the national radio orchestra ("Kol Israel Orchestra") in 1948. Throughout its history, the JSO has consistently championed Israeli compositions while performing the great classical repertoire. Over the decades, legendary musicians have graced the JSO stage, including Igor Stravinsky, Otto Klemperer, Arthur Rubinstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Isaac Stern, Pablo Casals, Yo-Yo Ma, Pierre Boulez, Tabea Zimmermann, Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, and many more. Among the orchestra's most notable premieres are Stravinsky's cantata Abraham and Isaac (1964) and Krzysztof Penderecki's Symphony No. 7 (conducted by Lorin Maazel). The orchestra's current Music Director for its 86th season is Maestro Julian Rachlin.
