Ketema Yirga is a Sweden-based Ethiopian saxophonist whose music is deeply rooted in the rich melodic traditions of Ethiopia. Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Ketema grew up surrounded by the country’s distinctive musical heritage, which continues to be a fundamental influence on his artistic identity. As a saxophonist, Ketema is particularly drawn to the unique tonal language of traditional Ethiopian music. His playing explores the characteristic melodies, scales, rhythms, and expressive qualities of Ethiopian music, while bringing them to life through the voice and versatility of the saxophone. Now based in Sweden, Ketema Yirga is developing a distinctive artistic path that connects Ethiopian musical heritage with the contemporary European music scene. His work reflects both a deep respect for tradition and a desire to explore new musical possibilities, creating a sound that celebrates Ethiopian identity while reaching across cultural and musical boundaries.
