MEGAFAUNA is a slacker rock, electronic solo project by Morgan Spaner, a fat, Jewish lesbian singer-songwriter/producer from Baltimore, MD. Beginning at the end of 2019 after a difficult band break up, Morgan, in familiar DIY territory, began producing her music in her apartment living room. As a woman, Morgan felt alienated and intimidated to begin recording and producing her music on her own, but taught herself during the amorphous blob of time of the Covid-19 pandemic. “I found myself really hermitting and trying to learn as much as I can about production. Any feelings of inadequacy I had had about not knowing what I was doing really faded away in isolation.” This led to the first MEGAFAUNA single release, “Golden Retriever.” Golden Retriever is reminiscent of a B-sides Pixies song in its unpredictable chord progression and seemingly lop-sided melodic phrasing, but offers catharsis in a simplistic moment achieved in the chorus.
