Bart-Jan Steerenberg (1975) is an Amsterdam-based musician and the driving force behind Northern Gardeners.
A professor by day and musician by night, Bart-Jan has been working as a design lecturer and creativity researcher at the University of Applied Science of Amsterdam since 2010. He likes to incorporate his love for sound, visuals, creativity and technology in both his lessons and his music. As a visual designer and art director he has made scores and sound-a-likes for clients. In 2019 he graduated as a sound engineer.
Bart-Jan’s music is inspired by nature and childhood dreams. He also draws inspiration from diverse music styles like ambient, trip hop, down tempo, chill wave, electronic jazz, psychedelic music, Lo-Fi hip hop, and dream pop.
The music project Northern Gardeners is heavily influenced by Four Tet, Kettel, DJ Krush, Pilote, Floating Points, Freescha and Boards of Canada. As for the name: Northern refers to Bart-Jan’s country of origin – the Netherlands – whe
