Born Ethan Russell in New Jersey in 2000, Russell Reid’s roots were founded in Kingston, Jamaica at an early age, and relocated to his hometown in the DMV in late 2008. Initially a producer, he began his career in 2018 as “Ran$um”, creating a mixture of reggae-flavored hip-hop. His sound at the time was greatly inspired by the 2015 SoundCloud era along with musicians like Mexikodro, Chief Keef, & his local peers. After landing a placement deal with Atlantic Records in 2019; Russell returned to Kingston to pursue his music career under the wings of his father, world-renowned reggae veteran Junior Reid. Since then, Russell challenged himself to expand the range of his musical skills. What once was limited to trap & hip-hop, matured into reggae, jazz, and R&B to name a few. In early 2021, Russell relinquished the “Ran$um” handle totally. Being raised by a Christian family, he now aims to live congruently in his Christian faith with the gift he has been entrusted with.
