Soulshine Johnson, formerly known as Ess Dixie is a blended folk singer-songwriter. Born in southern Georgia, Soulshine took heavy inspiration from soulful greats like Otis Redding and Ray Charles. During her childhood, her fondest memories involved the music of Michael Jackson, Johnnie Taylor, and The Spinners. During her teenage years, Soulshine became heavily invested in music after hearing Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black” album. At age 17 Soulshine received her first “real” guitar as a gift from her father and taught herself how to play basic chords. She notes, “I felt like I needed something to guide me when it came to writing songs. I was scared that I was tone deaf at the time and that guitar was my only hope. I did write when I was little, and I had a few songs. My most memorable one is called “Hazel Eyes” and I wrote it with my best friend at the time.
