adios nervosa does not ‘defy description’, but he does meander. The musical project of writer Ian Macartney, the name comes from his own experimental novella of the same name, a manuscript as playful and chaotic as the wonky pop he produces – cerebral but with a dance pulse, this is his attempt (for better or worse) at ‘dance-literature’. From half-sung glo-fi love songs to sinister spoken phrases set to existential techno to ambient soundscapes for readings, the music of adios nervosa is malleable, enigmatic and usually concerned with language, and what language does to us. It’s never afraid to be fun, though – it zips along at a Gen Z pace. Ultimately, adios nervosa is the sound of the comedown, the dazzled walk-back from the nightclub, stunned and exuberant though exhausted, always on the search for meaning.
