With gnarled, thundering bass lines scrawled beneath falsetto vocals and sly but rollicking guitars, Animal Scream’s aural persona is one of dark-but-fiery expression and vibrant visual appeal, igniting their weird-pop sensibility with a vast and varied sonic backdrop. “Josh calls our genre ‘Evil Motown’,” laughs singer/founding member Chad Monticue. Member Josh Sickels jokes: “If you gathered up Prince, Roy Orbison, Thom Yorke, and Misfits-era Glenn Danzig as the house band at the Bang Bang Bar in Twin Peaks, that’s often what our album sounds like." It’s with a similar dark humor that Animal Scream presents their debut LP Nightwalk, due for release July 24th on American Hermitage Records. The duo have crafted a lost at sea album that is accessible and fun, as though they’re using bracingly unique musical styling’s to ward off the unseen dark figure in their lives. Laughing throughout an album of tremendous, ethereal ups and downs, Nightwalk is Animal Scream at their most refined.
