Emmlyn's music meets at the intersection of jazz, R&B soul, and indie folk.  From her Southern Californian roots, Emmlyn was exposed early on to Mariachi music --- which poured onto the streets of her barrio at most parties and parks on the weekends --- this is where her love for strings and horns was born. And, while most of her friends listened to old-school classic rock, she gravitated to the strings and horns of old-school R&B soul, influenced with songs by Stevie Wonder and EW&F. The combination of these genres, mixed with the angst of an indie singer-songwriter, blends together to create a sound similar to sophisti-pop, like Sade and Bebel Gilberto.
