In the fall of 2020, in a dark storage closet armed with a digital field recorder, Cole Levesque began recording the songs that would later become the first publicly released album of solo indie-folk act Fort Laurie. Named in commemoration of his late aunt, whom Cole only knew and admired in memory, Fort Laurie takes musical inspiration from the likes of Jason Molina, Cat Power, Bridget St John, and Norway’s alt-country artist, St. Thomas. Fort Laurie is a stripped-back exploration of self-worth, regret, and unrest. Lead by dynamic and often plaintive vocals, the debut album, Encouraging Words for a Long Winter, is woven together by obsessive lyricism, bright nylon strings, and the waxing and waning of lingering vocal melodies.
