J-Ray Farasi, also known by his artist name Joshua Ray, is a mixed-media-based artist, poet, musician, dancer, and majoring in visual arts at Virginia State University. Born in November 2003 in Hopewell, VA, Joshua Ray embarked on a journey of self-discovery through art at the tender age of two, around the time he was diagnosed with the spectrum. Throughout his elementary years, he drew various animal characters and species. It wasn’t until high school and college that he began honing his artistic skills. Drawing inspiration from artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Mati Klarwein to Elizabeth Catlett and Ernie Barnes, Ray explores mixed-media art, employing oilsticks, pastels, and ink as his signature mediums. Notable movements like the Black Arts Movement and AfriCOBRA have influenced his perception and approach to art. In Joshua Ray’s creative philosophy, each work of art is like a child and should be treated like your own.
