John Cate & the van Gogh Brothers formed in Boston in 1995. John started his professional career as founding bassist with fusion pioneers "Zamcheck" in the late '60's and '70's. Zamcheck's brief career included tours with Gary Burton and Pat Metheny, and an appearance at the 1974 Newport Jazz Festival. After a decade-long hiatus, John's Joni Mitchell-inspired singer-songwriter self finally emerged. With 16 albums and 200+ television placements to their credit, the van Gogh Brothers continue to perform and record in Boston and Los Angeles, having pioneered the emergence of "Americana" in its early days in Nashville and LA. Lead guitarist Paul Candilore and John coined the band's name during the mixes of their 6th album after remarking that they "each had one good ear." John's full circle moment came the night he played for Joni Mitchell at her home in LA shortly before relocating from Malibu to Boston in 2017.
