I’m João, a mechanical engineer by training, based in Lisbon. I’ve spent years moving between engineering projects and creative work: 3D animation, motion graphics, visual effects and, more recently, my own AI-assisted tools, under the GetEffect brand. machines have mothers is my music project. I write, produce and work from material with a concrete human origin: songs my mother wrote, lines from a song my father dedicated to her, poems by Fernando Pessoa. The voice on these songs is a recreation of my mother’s voice as a young singer, generated by an AI model I trained on her old recordings. I design the covers and visual identity myself. I’m interested in what passes from one generation to the next, and in what machines can help us keep.
