Michael’s new album, “what is happy.” is slated for release in early 2021. It was recorded in his living room with one microphone, a synthesizer, and his laptop. Lyrically, the album is a reflection and rejection of modern social media culture. “It’s Orwellian. Everyone is constantly telling you how to be happy. As an unknown artist I struggle to reconcile my own self-worth with a culture that rates your value as a person on your social media standing. It’s exhausting. I feel like I’m living in an episode of Black Mirror. We constantly reinforce the idea that you need fame, recognition, and influence to be happy. Attention is everything. And we abuse it. We copy what others do because it got them recognition, and then we get to a point where we’re supposed to be happy, but we’re not. That’s what this album is about.” Michael also hosts a podcast, Public Diary of a Private Person. The podcast is based on his blog of the same name and published on michaelmullens.com
