Holding them tight until they burst. It’s about getting hurt but not wanting to be dramatic about how deeply the feelings are affecting you because nobody else seems to be reacting this way. The song mimics this journey of taking control of your own emotions, starting in a dreamy soundscape of layered vocal harmony which provides the backbone for the lead melody to introduce the pain and heartache. As the song grows into a full band arrangement, the narrative starts to question victimhood. Then the song bursts into empowerment: rage, confidence, feeling fed up. I wrote “For Avery, in June” for my friend who’s been knocked down by relationships so many times. Every time she gets hurt by one of these emotionally illiterate men, I just want her to be okay. So the song’s about that, about calling her back home, and saying that even when these men don’t show up for her, I’ll be there. It’s sad but hopeful.
