This song is about my mom and her siblings growing up during WWII in a small fishing village in Japan. Her father and older brother were conscripted into the military. The rest were similarly forced to the support Empire's war effort, committed to work even as little kids without much food or care for their well being. Her mom died of a stroke from the stress of it all, leaving her 15 year old sister (my dear aunt) to care for the 4 younger siblings. The youngest, who was only a toddler at the time, explained that her earliest memory of life was being on her sister's back running for their lives as the US bombers flew over head and air raid sirens blared. My mom spoke often of the starvation she endured and how that shaped the rest of her life (and the tremendous pride she felt eventually gaining US citizenship). This is my little reminder (to myself) that there is precious innocence lost in every conflict and to be forever grateful for all blessings (no matter how small or seemingly insignificant).
