This winter song is dedicated to those who, in the street, sing to exist, to live or to survive.
-
** French version
Aujourd’hui tu n’es pas là
ou alors on n’te voit pas.
Dans le ciel pas le moindre cirrus,
ni l’ombre d’un nimbus.
Trop sec, trop froid,
on n’te sent pas.
Shopping du samedi la foule se rue,
Au pas d'charge.
Sur le zinc du bar la partie de cartes,
et tu n'joues pas.
C'est une belle journée d’hiver,
Les manteaux fermés car il fait froid.
-
Un jeune sans-abri est planté là,
à côté d’une bâtisse en bois-
Du haut du perron, il entonne
un air de bossa.
Comme il chante juste pour son chien,
Son chapeau ne fait pas l'plein.
Solitaire et transi de froid,
On ne l'écoute pas.
Même quand il élève sa voix,
On ne l'remarque pas.
Aujourd'hui il aura pour seul public
une ronde de flics.
-
Toi tu l’aurais remarqué c'chanteur
à la croix de bois.
Quand il chante en claquant des doigts
on the sunny side of the street.
Ce beau pied-de-nez d’un noir opprimé
Qui se réjouit de marcher du bon côté.
Cette histoire ma foi tu me l’a racontée
La méprise n’est pas celle qu’on croit.
Dans la rue sombre les passants affluent
Certains s'arrêtent enfin.
Ecouter ce lumineux chanteur dont la voix
Me fait penser à toi.

** English version
Today you're not here
or we can't see you.
In the sky, not the slightest cirrus cloud,
nor the shadow of a nimbus.
Too dry, too cold,
we can't feel you.
Saturday shopping, the crowd rushes,
At a brisk pace.
On the zinc counter of the bar, the card game,
and you're not playing.
It's a beautiful winter day,
Coats closed because it's cold.
-
A young homeless man stands there,
next to a wooden building-
From the top of the steps, he sings
a bossa nova tune.
As he sings in tune to his dog,
His hat doesn't fill up.
Lonely and frozen with cold,
No one listens to him.
Even when he raises his voice,
No one notices him.
Today his only audience will be
a patrol of cops.
-
You would have noticed this singer
with the wooden cross.
When he sings, snapping his fingers
on the sunny side of the street.
This handsome snub of an oppressed black man
Who rejoices to walk on the right side.
This story, I believe, you told it to me
The misunderstanding is not what we think.
Passersby flock to the dark street
Some finally stop.
Listening to this luminous singer whose voice
Reminds me of you.
