The Awakening
There is a specific kind of suffocation that comes from screaming into a void that refuses to echo back. With their explosive new single, "HAVĀR" (The Awakening), Drang-State steps away from the 13th-century mystics of their previous albums to confront the raw, breathless urgency of the present. Driven by relentless 8th-note hi-hats, a heavily overdriven bassline, and soaring, delay-drenched guitars, the track is a masterclass in post-punk tension. It sounds like a frantic, desperate sprint toward an ever-receding horizon. But beneath the driving indie-rock exterior lies a profoundly dark and urgent narrative. The lyrics are drawn from the legendary modern Persian poet Fereydoon Moshiri, painting the picture of a man trapped in a sealed room, physically destroying his hands against the walls. “I pound my fists upon the door,” frontman Karen sings, his tenor vocals strained to the point of breaking. “I scrape my fingers against the windows... I am suffocating. I am exhausted by it all.” For non-Persian speakers, the kinetic energy of the track transcends language. But to understand "HAVĀR" is to understand the soil from which it was born. It is impossible to separate the sheer claustrophobia of this song from the reality of modern Iran. It is the sonic embodiment of a vibrant, deeply rooted generation living behind heavy, locked iron doors—navigating the suffocating weight of an uncompromising state, heavy censorship, and erased futures. When the soaring lead guitar kicks in and Kahroba begs for "a space to breathe... the peak of a mountain, the heart of a desert," it is not just romantic poetry. It is a literal plea for oxygen in a society where simply existing feels like an act of defiance. The song reaches its cathartic, shattering climax with a question directed not at the oppressors, but at the sleeping masses—the silent bystanders of the world. “I will let out my shout... Who will come and shout with me?” Backed by Kaveh’s punishing, relentless drums and Sayeh’s immovable, aggressive bassline, "HAVĀR" is more than a post-punk revival anthem. It is a desperate pulse. It is the sound of a people scraping at the glass of the world, fighting for a single breath of free air. more
