Living in the Paris region, Satie would walk every day to a restaurant in the capital to play the piano; it was there that he developed his Gymnopédie, an iconoclastic innovation in the Kingdom of Classical music, since major 7th chords were literally played all notes together. A leap forward in sound aesthetics, shortly after this step was taken by Debussy (who introduced the 9th), Scriabin and so many others who made these sonorities so familiar to us.
Satie had rather strange lifestyle habits, a bit of a monk, a bit of a hermit, but he actively participated in artistic movements, and in particular the Groupe des Six co-founded with Jacques Ibert and Darius Milhaud. The latter fled the vicissitudes of his time and settled in California where he trained a brilliant student named Dave Brubeck in the art of composition. The student was deeply marked by his teachings, and when the time came, he would know how to pay tribute to his masters.
Bypassing an avant-garde jazz that was constantly improving and codifying itself, Django Reinhardt published many works of a poetic nature. The economy of notes, the melodies that were both simple and suave, the stripping down of the arrangements made these works unforgettable and even universal.
“Elf and Djinn at teatime” is a musical journey with these three great composers. It includes the first 3 Gymnopédie, the first 3 Gnossienne, a tender and minimalist composition by Brubeck entitled I see Satie, as well as Reinhardt's famous Nuage. Conceived as a series of paintings (go see the video https://youtu.be/vwiXqMkcdGU ), the set brings together recordings in live conditions spanning a dozen years.
Have a good trip!
