“ 'Coolma' is a word I coined from 'Kuma' (Japanese word for ‘bear’). It means bear in Japanese but it sounds like me saying in English, ‘Can you dig this cool house track, Mama?’ ” says DJ Coolma. “I grew up in Kirishima, Japan, now famous for a few famous sake brands. It doesn’t hurt to mix some good sounding tracks to those sake,” he says smilingly. While he spent his youth in the South of Japan, he found that he had a strong passion for music. This passion lead him to study jazz and classical music in college eventually. “So, my music is the combination of what I had learned and what is currently out there. I consider myself a sort of like a bridge between East and West; old schools and new schools.” He lives somewhere in Tokyo now and is working hard every day to produce great sounding dance/electronic tracks that go well with sake.
