"But Not My Voice" is probably the most personal song I've ever written. In it, I look back at my childhood through the eyes of the woman I've become. I sing about a mother who never abandoned me, who truly loved me, yet stayed silent when I needed her voice more than anything.
.
I never say what happened. Instead, this song explores the invisible cost of protecting appearances, preserving family peace, or defending a family name when the truth is asking to be heard. As I wrote it, I realized my anger wasn't only toward my mother. It was also toward all the women before her who had been taught that silence was sometimes the only way to survive.
.
Today, I think I understand her choices without pretending they didn't leave scars. Understanding doesn't give me my childhood back. It simply allows me to lay down a part of the weight I've been carrying for so long.
.
"But Not My Voice" isn't a song about blame. It's a song about love, fear, inherited silence, and the courage it takes to become the first person who refuses to pass that silence on. This is my way of reclaiming a voice that, despite everything, was never truly lost.

============================
.
[VERSE]
I still remember Saturday mornings
Your hand around my little wrist
You made the world feel warm enough
Like nothing bad could ever exist
The house was full of ordinary days
Pictures smiling on every wall
But somewhere underneath the quiet
Something small began to fall
.
[PRE CHORUS]
I searched your eyes a thousand times
Looking for the words we'd never say
.
[CHORUS]
You held my hand... but not my voice
You made the safest of impossible choices
Saving names that had been standing for years
While I learned to live beside my fears
I know your love was always real
I know you carried what you couldn't heal
But silence always keeps the cost...
And I was the one who paid it all
.
[VERSE]
No broken doors, no screaming nights
Just careful smiles and folded grace
Adults pretending not to notice
The shadow written on my face
It wasn't only you, I know
There were women long before your time
Passing down the same old answer
"Keep the peace and you'll survive."
.
[PRE CHORUS]
Maybe every generation
Called survival something else
.
[CHORUS]
You held my hand... but not my voice
You made the safest of impossible choices
Saving names that had been standing for years
While I learned to live beside my fears
I know your love was always real
I know you carried what you couldn't heal
But silence always keeps the cost...
And I was the one who paid it all
.
[BRIDGE]
Now I see the girl inside my mother
Trying not to watch her whole world break
Maybe you were fighting different monsters
Maybe you gave all that you could make
I finally understand your reasons
Without pretending they were right
Understanding brings me closer...
It never gives my childhood back
.
[FINAL CHORUS]
You held my hand... but not my voice
Love and fear can make impossible choices
I don't hate the woman that you were
I hate the silence we preferred
I'll carry neither shame nor blame
I won't protect a family name
If healing starts with telling truth...
Then let it start with memore
