Musengabere
A riveting but familiar feeling of having a girl on your mind day in, day out. That state of mind was put in the drivers seat of this highly anticipated Zim-Afro-Fusion track, taking listeners into a journey through the artist’s playmaking in the game of love. It begs the question- how can young Roico di Bwoi go on living life despite the girl of his dreams NOT knowing his true feelings for her. At the same time as he swoons her with smooth vocals, he also reflects on the universal truth and relatability of his struggle to make his point to her. Setting out his song as an anthem of ‘the chase’, an expression of people’s strong wills to make their love felt, he pulls on the heartstrings of his compatriots, inspiring them to go after their dreams. The idea behind Musengabere, which translates literally to Don’t Be Afraid or Don’t Lie, is a cultural concept of marriage for Shona people, which involves the taking of a hyena by force so that it can have the chance to see you for your true self. When taken away from the company of its opinionated & rudely avowed peers, protecting and hounding each other with ridicule, the chosen hyena is finally able to be with its captive and see them clearly, away from everything. Though the literal tradition has been made illegal after giving rise to kidnapping and bride-stealing in Zim, the song goes beyond the past idea of Musengabere, showing the dreams of young men everywhere hoping to take someone for themselves and show them just how much they are worth staying with. The controversy and excitement in the title and subject of the song make it a perfect anthem for the chase and an excellent party tune, getting heads to turn and hearts to swivel and shake. When this song is playing, stay on your feet lest someone else might come sweep you up. And if you might be looking for that, or hoping for someone special to do just that, then this song is for you. An anthem of young passion and wild, raw emotion. Good things come from allowing these feelings to grow inside you.. So letting Roico bring good to you with Musengabere is the mood for 2023. Let’s shake this year up, take what’s ours, and make our feeling heard. more
