On the 1st of October 1066, a Norwegian invasion army led by Harald Hardråde fought the anglo saxon army led by Harold Godwinson in a battle at Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire. According to sagas, a lone berserker, more than 2 meters tall, held the bridge on his own for more than an hour until he was stabbed by a spear from under the bridge. The Norwegian army was defeated, their king was killed, and the viking era ended. more

Eirik the Red’s son, Leif Eiriksson, is credited with discovering the Americas 500 years prior to Colombus. The vikings went there several times. They needed oak and iron nails for their longships, and travelled so far south that they found grape vines, hence Vinland. Being vikings, they obviously ended up fighting with the locals, which they referred to as Skrælings.more
