Toronto-based jerrybyday is an anomaly. Born to a political and scientific family, his love for music was deemed a cute hobby that ought not to be considered as a “respectable” career path — a familiar plight to many creative artists of African descent. Now, after a years-long hiatus, jerrybyday is back with the release of Just Fine: a sonic exploration of the turbulent dynamics that exist in toxic relationships, written mid-pandemic. This record features a startling performance by Jerry that dynamically switches from staccato to legato with rubberized fluidity, depicting the highs and lows that toxicity can wreak on a relationship. To let him tell it in his own words, “I’ve missed making music and feel so grateful to finally be doing what I’ve wanted to do all my life! I’m only getting warmed up right now.
