Morals
I wrote this song shortly after I had a discussion with my father about morality. I had gone on a rant about morals and how I just couldn’t understand why it was such a challenge for all of us (as humans) to agree and adhere to a basic set of tenants, a set of morals, that we live our lives by. And then he said something that shattered my previous way of thinking: “Listen [K’sa], morals are for those who can afford them.” And that blew my mind. Because of course, it was true. Rarely do people steal just to steal. Sure, there’s a few Winona Ryder’s out there who steal just for the thrill of it. And yeah, there are some people who steal because it’s a quick, easy, lazy, (fill in the blank) option to “attainment” of some sort. But for others? It’s out of necessity. They don’t have other options. They don’t have the privileges that allow them to afford morality. They have children to feed and no money to buy food. They have a sick mother who can’t afford medicine. They have needs that aren’t being met and maybe the only viable option is to cross moral boundaries that more privileged people can afford. This concept is the core of the song. And I’m convinced that the solutions to most of our major problems lie within the fields of education, democratic participation, and proper checks and balances. If we are giving tax breaks to the wealthy when the people who fall on the opposite end of the socioeconomic strata can’t even afford to cover the basic living necessities like food and shelter? We’ve got problems. And those problems can be solved by actively being involved politically from a grassroots level all the way up. None of these problems are easy to solve. But opening up discussions could be a great first step to helping bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots. This song is my discussion starter. more
