The Protagonist
"The Protagonist" is dedicated to everyone who has ever carried the weight of two lives inside one relationship. The ones who made the compromises. The ones who absorbed the conflicts. The ones who kept adjusting their dreams, their needs, and sometimes even their identity just to keep something standing. For a long time, I believed that love meant sacrifice. I thought the more I gave, the greater the chance the relationship would survive. So I carried the responsibilities, the worries, the repairs, and the hope. I became the savior, the mediator, the builder... every role necessary to keep the story from falling apart. But after carrying the relationship alone for so long, something else eventually collapsed. Me. Without even realizing it, we were no longer two protagonists writing a story together. The other person had become the center of the narrative. Their needs, their emotions, their expectations, their wounds. Meanwhile, I had become a secondary character. A supporting role. A servant. A butler whose job was to keep the scenery standing while the story revolved around someone else. And when nothing was left standing, everything stopped. Looking back, I resent them for never seeing me as a protagonist too. But I resent myself even more for accepting that role for so long. "The Protagonist" is a reminder for anyone who is living, or has lived, through the same situation. Do not forget yourself inside a relationship. Because when love is real, the other person will never require your disappearance in order to exist. They will always see you as every bit as much of a protagonist as themselves. Musically, the song is built around a deliberate dissonance between melody and rhythm. The verses describe the different roles I took on to keep the relationship alive, while the choruses always repeat the same lyrics. Yet their energy, rhythm, and placement create a contrast with the verses, almost as if the body keeps moving while the heart already knows that something is broken. That musical tension mirrors what it feels like to slowly lose yourself while trying to save a relationship. Then comes the final chorus, which becomes the outro. For the first time, it no longer contradicts the rest of the song. Because by that point, the story is over. The sacrifice is over. The roles are over. The moment of no longer being yourself is over. And maybe it is the beginning of becoming the protagonist of your own life again. P.S. If this song gave you even a little strength, then it has already accomplished its mission. May God watch over you. ============================================= #VERSE You'd cast the actors before they knew their names Already talking like the ending wouldn't change You'd tell me where we'd be in twenty different ways Like every chapter of our lives was on the page #PRE-CHORUS I learned every line by heart Played the role right from the start Stayed through every take and scene #CHORUS I was nothing more than your NPC Trying hard to fit the script Every time I tried being me You'd try to rewrite another... rip I thought we were telling our story I just wanted a you and me, not glory I was only your main violinist Because you were the protagonist #VERSE You'd set the tempo every time the music changed I'd learn a new melody and rearrange When your harmony was breaking from the strain I'd play a little louder just to hide the pain Some nights felt like symphonies out in the rain Some days I'd change the whole song once again #PRE-CHORUS I played every note for you Changed the key when asked me to Kept the rhythm through the night #CHORUS I was nothing more than your NPC Trying hard to fit the script Every time I tried being me You'd try to rewrite another... rip I thought we were telling our story I just wanted a you and me, not glory I was only your main violinist Because you were the protagonist #VERSE Then one night I looked beyond the neon lights Past every version we kept alive inside Past all the stories we were trying hard to write Searching for the truth we always tried to hide And it hit me that love is more than someone's wish More than heroes chasing roles that never fit #BRIDGE Maybe we were both afraid Hiding underneath the plays Never learning how to love #OUTRO I was nothing more than your NPC I!!! Trying hard to fit the script Every time I tried being me You'd try to rewrite another... rip I thought we were telling our story I just wanted a you and me, not glory I was only your main violinist Because you were the protagonistmore
