Kin & Coal is the storytelling and music project of Shirley Radabaugh, a genealogist and family historian with deep roots in Preston County, West Virginia. Some songs tell researched stories of real people, places, and events. Others begin with a newspaper clipping, family memory, photograph, tradition, or intriguing detail from the past and grow into original stories inspired by Appalachian life. Shirley conducts the research, writes the lyrics, and provides the creative direction for every song. Music and vocals are created using AI tools, and is transparent about that because listeners deserve to know how the songs are made. The goal is simple: to remember the people who came before us and the lives they lived as more than names in a census or dates carved in stone, one story and one song at a time.

I Could Outrun Any Boy I Raised
Born in 1837, John Amos Radabaugh was an old-time West Virginia mountaineer — a man of the hills and, by all accounts, an ornery old cuss. In 1904, at 67 years old, he bet a gallon jug of liquor that he could outrun any boy he raised. He had seven sons. 😄 “I Could Outrun Any Boy I Raised” grew out of my genealogy research into John Amos, my 3x great-grandfather, and one wonderfully irresistible newspaper story. Lyrics by me with structuring help from AI. Produced using Suno.more
