Sometimes we are taught that letting go is an act of strength. People say that leaving behind memories, people, objects, mistakes, and pain is the only way to move forward. But no one talks about how difficult it is to release the things that once saved us, made us feel alive, or slowly destroyed us while we were learning how to survive.
It is not always worth letting go so quickly. Because some pain also builds us, some memories — even the painful ones — remind us of who we once were, and some scars tell stories that deserve to exist. There are people who are no longer here, yet they still live inside small habits, songs, smells, and silences. There are objects that may seem meaningless to the world, but carry entire universes for the person who keeps them. And there are traumas that do not disappear just because someone says “move on.”
Letting go does not always mean forgetting. Sometimes it means learning how to carry something without letting it destroy you. Accepting that certain moments may hurt forever, and still choosing to keep walking. Because human beings are not made to erase things; we are made to remember, to feel, and to transform.
In the end, many of us pretend to be okay while silently fighting ghosts no one else can see. We smile so nobody worries, we stay quiet so we do not seem weak, and we continue forward even when something inside us is still broken.
The importance of letting go is what a smile can hide.more
