The Paradox of Fear "Dodelijke nachtschaduw" (Deadly Nightshade) is a masterful exercise in atmospheric rock. The song succeeds in making abstract fear tangible through a perfect symbiosis of haunting lyrics and a driving, almost hypnotic composition. It is a track that the listener not only hears but feels deep in their gut. Nicart’s lyrics offer a fascinating exploration of inner turmoil, wrapped in the metaphor of the 'nightshade' (nachtschaduw). Musically, the track mirrors the duality of the lyrics: a blend of menace and unstoppable momentum, delivered through hypnotic Dutch-language rock. "Dodelijke nachtschaduw" is a triumph of introspective rock. John Nicart succeeds in transforming the unspeakable—the paralyzing fear lurking behind success—into an anthem of resilience. It is a song that invites the listener to confront their own shadows. Within the 1995 catalogue, this track stands as a beacon of artistic integrity and emotional depth.
