Year 2135.
Captain Rylan Shaw had promised to make the run alone — a long haul to the very edge of the Milky Way, carrying a classified cargo of medical technology and support supplies.
No crew, no witnesses, only the hum of his ship and the soft voice of the ship’s integrated intelligence, AURA-9, to keep him company.
The company — Nestura Corporation — had promised a double salary if he made the trip solo. “Efficiency bonus,” they called it.
Rylan launched from the Lunar Departure Ring, where gravity was mercifully negligible and corporate logistics reigned. The cargo list had arrived sealed, and AURA-9 refused to disclose its contents. The company’s humanoid operations unit, L-0M, handled loading, navigation reports, and all communications with Nestura.
Whenever Rylan asked about the goods, the machine would simply answer,
“Authorization denied, Captain. You are cleared for transport, not inspection.”
It was easier to stop asking.
