MBT Creative Breakdown: How I Built R&B Fantasy
When I wrote R&B Fantasy, I wasn't trying to make the whole song explicit from the first line.
The idea was to create a journey.
I wanted the listener to feel the connection between two people first. Then I wanted to slowly build the attraction, the chemistry and the anticipation.
1. Start with the connection
The beginning establishes the mood.
It's R&B, so I'm thinking about intimacy, confidence, attraction and that feeling when you're really drawn towards somebody.
I'm not giving away the whole story yet.
2. Build the tension
As the song develops, the lyrics become more flirtatious.
This is where the listener starts understanding where the song is heading.
The important thing is not giving them everything immediately.
You're creating anticipation.
3. Let the music help tell the story
The production is part of the writing too.
The rhythm, vocals, arrangement and build all help create that feeling of getting closer to the moment.
It's not just about what I'm saying.
It's about when I choose to say it.
4. Then comes the payoff
And this is where R&B Fantasy changes gear.
After all that build-up, the chorus finally gets straight to the point.
That's the fantasy.
That's the desire I've been building towards.
And because I waited until the chorus to reveal it directly, the line has much more impact.
It's the musical equivalent of:
"We've been building up to this moment... now BANG!"
5. Make the payoff memorable
The other important part is making the chorus something people can actually sing along to.
A chorus doesn't necessarily need complicated lyrics.
Sometimes the most memorable hook is the simplest statement of the idea you've been building towards.
So the creative formula behind R&B Fantasy was:
CONNECTION → ATTRACTION → BUILD-UP → TENSION → CLIMAX → HOOK
That's the lesson.
The explicit part isn't there just to shock people.
It's the payoff.
I wanted the listener to experience the fantasy building before finally arriving at the destination.
The MBT Production Lesson
One thing I've learned through producing music is that the impact of a moment often comes from what you make people wait for.
If you give away your biggest moment in the first few seconds, you've got nowhere to build.
But if you create the atmosphere, introduce the idea, build the tension and then deliver the payoff at the right moment...
that's songwriting.
That's production.
That's storytelling.
And that's how I approached R&B Fantasy.
