When I heard the beat for Lately by my dude DJ Impact, I knew I wanted to have it be a song about productivity, enjoying life, and being grateful for all that I have. I envisioned this song to be something I could blast while driving around in my car on a sunny day. ⁠ ⁠ Backstory: When I first started making music, I did not have the intention of sharing it with the world in any capacity. It was 100% for me. Creating music was definitely a cathartic process that helped me navigate intense feelings but I also intended to write songs to help lift myself up in times I was feeling down. This song is one of those songs. Lately helps serve as a reminder to myself (and hopefully others) that it’s okay to feel confident and enjoy your life despite not having many of the material status markers that society deems as “successful” ie: the fancy Porsche, the mansion in Newport Beach, the designer x, y, and z, etc etc etc. I wanted to give a shout out to the most important things in life: meaningful relationships and experiences, while also giving credence to my somewhat maniacal desire to be productive at all times. ⁠ ⁠ Also, this was also one of the first songs that I started to explore truly what vocal layering was in the sense of running through doubles. While we wound up taking most of it out, it was still a really good learning experience.⁠more
