“I was performing with Mick Fleetwood one night, and a couple of songs in, some fella told me ‘..that’s Jimi’s guitar you’re playing!’ So there I am, jamming with a legend, finding out I’ve been handed Jimi Hendrix’s very own guitar! I was in heaven.
Hendrix has always played a major part in my musical life, both as a writer and guitarist, so it’s a natural (though daunting) step to be recording an album of his work.
Nicolo (Panzarasa) casually mentioned one day that he’d love to record a couple of Jimi Hendrix songs, so I jumped up and said “I’m your man! Let’s do it!”. Then the panic set in! He had a shock when I later told him I wanted to record nine songs - we only had one day to record!
It’s a tribute to the great musicians and studio team, that we actually did it (and captured it on film). It was nerve-wracking just trying to keep up with Mr Jimi, especially after just one rehearsal! Towards the session end, our smoke machine triggered the alarms during “Fire”, so the fire brigade came and we had to evacuate the building. Out of time before the nine - we had just 5 mins left before being kicked out. It was the last track, “Are You Experienced” and I just HAD to do it. Filming stopped. We did one take, and captured the best track of the album - raw, intense, desperate, death or glory. This album is my homage to Jimi for the love and beautiful colours he shared with us during his brief time here….
