Pockets Full of Gold is the last track from my new album Valley Songs that was released last week, 14 songs, just voice and guitar, about the valleys of life.
The song is the final journey of the record. From a stumble through the city with a shattered mind, to a praying lady in a bar at the outskirts of town. Deep into the deepest woods with its demon and the return to the roadhouse where everything comes together, for a pocket full of gold.
Lyrics:
As I walked through the city with my mind in shatters
Looking for a clue to a path that matters
The man on the road with a sign in his hand
Gave me smile - "you gotta understand"
All the tales that you've been told tonight
Are just clusters in the wind
And with glee emotion
Paired with true devotion
I could hear the roadman say:
You sold your freedom for a pocket full of gold
You tried to get away but you're only getting old
And you wish that you'd find a place to stay
Where it all melts away, every night and every day.
So I journeyed out of town through the biting storm
To find some shelter for my heart to warm
The lady at the bar took me by the hand
She gave me as smile - "you need to understand"
Won't you let me make you whole tonight
Can I take your pain away.
And without confusion
Voiced into intrusion
I could hear the lady pray:
You sold your loving for a pocket full of gold
You tried to get away but you're only getting old
And you wish that you could find a place to stay
Where it all melts away, every night and every day.
So i kept on running through the deepest woods
Where the fear felt real and I understood
The demon in the dark that was laughing at me
Shouted "Hang on brother, it is time to see:
You've come far but you must turn around
There is nothing here for you
And with laughing eyes
Sorrow's true disguise
Sounded through with every play:
You sold your soul for a pocket full of gold.
You tried to get away but your only getting old.
And you wish that you had a place to stay
Where it all melts away
Every night and every day.
So i swam back through the swamps and the desert dunes
Looking for a roadhouse to sing my tunes.
As the morning broke, one afternoon, I happened upon an abandoned saloon
All the spirits that my travels met.
Congregated at the bar
And the chorus sang
And the barbells rang
Coming closer in a haze
You sold your self for a pocket full of gold.
You tried to get away but your only getting old.
And you wish that you'd found a place to stay
Where it all melts away
Every night and every day.
You sold your self for a pocket full of gold.
You tried to get away but your only getting old.
And you wish that you'd found a place to stay
Where it all melts away
Every night and every day.
