A Navajo from Dilkon, Arizona, Gilly grew up amidst the challenges of generational trauma, witnessing addiction, poverty, gang violence, and other negative influences in his rural community. Spending much of his youth in juvenile detention centers, it was in a cell at Chinle Juvenile Detention Center that he began to write. His lyrics are deeply personal, reflecting his experiences with addiction, losing a friend, suicidal thoughts, feelings of worthlessness, homelessness, and repeated incarcerations. Despite the toll on his mental health, Gilly uses his music to express himself and to remind others that Native men can also be emotional. Dreams were seldom spoken of until now, but YN GILLY is determined to chase his, one verse or word at a time.
