At my core, I'm a songwriter. I’ve been writing songs since 1979.
I write songs the way I always have: with a guitar in lap, a pencil in hand, on any scrap of paper I can find. My songs draw upon my love of language(s), lists, my upbringing, almost always a personal experience. They grapple with the deeply personal and the fleeting universal, often in the same verse.
Also, at my core, I’m a technologist. That started when I took apart my Close ‘n Play record player as a boy. Professionally, my work in the Language Lab at the university and in the field of Ed Tech for 40+ years has taught me to fully embrace the tools and technologies of our moment in time.
Technology — and now AI — can offer us an amazing view or mirror upon ourselves. As an extension of our greatest or maybe worst human qualities, we get to choose how we use the tools around us for good, including the advancement of our best human qualities. Or not.
How we use our tools has always been up to us.
